Pink Noises 1.1.13

Instant Coffee, an artist collective, explores the intersection of color and sound through their ongoing research project, Pink Noise. Rooted in the premise that humans are inherently attuned to distinguish unique hues, this project provokes a reconsideration of sensory experiences and emotional responses.

Pink Noise is framed as an aesthetic investigation that aims to visualize sound. Defined by its relationship to human biorhythms, pink noise is characterized by its ability to mask background sounds and enhance focus. It has gained traction in various fields, offering therapeutic benefits by relieving stress, boosting productivity in corporate settings, and aiding concentration in educational environments. Unlike white noise, which comprises an equal blend of all frequencies, pink noise presents a more subdued auditory texture, diminishing intensity at higher octaves.

This tonal variability allows for the selection of specific frequencies and creates a sound wave characterized by balanced energy across octaves. Instant Coffee views these aspects as a gateway for translating sound into visual forms and tangible experiences. The collective's pursuit intentionally blurs the lines between art, science, design, and the absurd. They posit that while scientific inquiry has its boundaries, the realm of pseudo-science remains open to infinite exploration.

The Pink Noises App was developed in collaboration with programmer Kevin Doole and features sound compositions from The Pinc Lincolns and Fortunato Durutti Marinetti. This initiative received significant support from grunt gallery, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Creative Economies initiative of British Columbia.
